Vampire: The Masquerade 30th Anniversary

Happy Vampire: The Masquerade 30th Anniversary!

30 years ago today, Vampire: The Masquerade premiered at Origins Game Fair. Happy anniversary to Vampire and the World of Darkness!

What We Do In The Shadows

The LARP jokes in the What We Do In The Shadows series might as well be waving to the camera and saying "yes, we know!"

The Night In Question

A big one-night immersive Vampire: The Masquerade LARP. In Texas, The Night In Question isn't exactly handy for me, unfortunately. But it looks preeeeetty cool.

Affairs Of The Guild

A one-off Vampire: The Masquerade LARP in New Orleans, just two weeks away. Perhaps related to Tampa By Night moving venue and shifting size?

Sounds fun (although, ew, Setites) and I'd like a chance to play something like this a little closer to home.

World Of Darkness dot com and Storytellers Vault

World Of Darkness dot com is on its way in August - an online service for groups running games, like D&D Beyond.

The nostalgic in me wants it to include a moderated chat game, but hey. :D

Also coming soon, Storytellers Vault, like the DMs' Guild for the Storyteller System, starting with the existing editions of Vampire: The Masquerade (see the style guide PDF emphasizing the differences, which makes me want to play a first edition game) and moving on from there. "This is the perfect time to pull out your old notes on that unique Bloodline you created or to write up your own chronicle as a By Night. You provide the ideas - we provide the tools." Other games, LARP and historical setting templates to follow.

I will spare the world my unique Bloodline.

FOR NOW.

Hanging out in-game

"Another advantage of vampirism - not having to line up outside clubs." Me on WOD Happens.

Just hanging out in clubs is something vampires do more than most WOD character types - including humans. Chicago By Night gave several pages to the Succubus Club, and then it got a book to itself soon after. (As well as a general book on social scenes named after it, and the real club at Grand Masquerade and By Night conventions.) World Of Darkness online was at one point going to be about 1/3 "the coffeeshop", a social game. Elysium in LARP and tabletop and chat is mostly hanging out (and the occasional presentation to or attempted assassination of the prince) and how long did we spend clubbing and being snarky at our booth at Faust in New Bremen?

Vampires in nightclubs are a thing, of course - and they always have something to do, picking up likely victims.

Having just been out tonight... it's usually more fun to do than play, unless you have something to do in-character.

The most fun hanging out in-game tends to be conversational. So homes, pubs and coffee shops... somewhere you can hear the other PCs. And often, hey, where you're playing for real!

Nosferatu!

In twenty-three years I've never seen someone create a Nosferatu in a tabletop Vampire: The Masquerade game.

It nearly happened at a recent session of an ongoing Masquerade game I hear about regularly-ish... then didn't.

The fact that I've seen one in each of the last two Requiem games I've been in - one monstrously ugly and one not ugly but still scary - makes me think the fact Masquerade Nosferatu must always be ugly could be what puts people off.

I've seen some in chats - usually "alt" secondary characters though, even there.

Masquerade LARPS, meanwhile, have lots of Nosferatu, mostly played by people who want to show up to games in monster makeup.

Likewise, if the WOD MMO had come out, I would have at least tried out wilder options for making a character avatar. A strong visual and a virtual dressing-up box is always appealing.

It's the combover that really kills it.

Then again, nobody's played a particularly attractive character in the last couple games I've run either. That's probably stranger... The games have tended towards investigation rather than social interaction, so standing out either way wouldn't really help.

What We Do In The Shadows

... Yeah, that looks quite a lot like what we do in the shadows. Out here now, months ahead of the US.

I imagine as bands have taken to This Is Spinal Tap, WOD games and especially Vampire game groups may start dropping the odd quote. Hopefully not as many as Monty Python And The Holy Grail quotes around any game of Pendragon - no game can survive that!

"Vampire! Vampire here! Vampire! Right here!"
